eClassics, a Stuttgart-based EV-conversion company, unveiled a stunning all-electric concept based on the classic Volkswagen T1 Samba Bus. The van, a collaboration with Volkswagen, is dubbed the e-BULLI, after what is a popular nickname for VW's iconic microbus. The price for an e-BULLI, featuring redesigned front and rear axles, starts at a shade under 65,000 Euros (Rs.53.35 lakh excluding Indian taxes and duties). The company will also offer conversions of VW T2 and T3 vans. For the concept e-BULLI, eClassics used a 1966 T1 Samba Bus that spent close to five decades on the roads of California. Powered by a 61kW electric motor providing twice as much power as the fossil fuel powered original, the microbus gets up to a top speed of 130kmph as against 105kmph in the original. Power is delivered via a single speed gearbox, complete with regen braking.

There are a number of mechanical changes as well starting with the chassis, which has also been redesigned: there are multi-link front and rear axles with adjustable shock absorbers and coilover struts, plus a new rack-and-pinion steering system and four internally ventilated disc brakes.

Much like the original, the e-BULLI is rear-wheel drive, and like the new ID.3 and ID.BUZZ, the e-BULLI's can be charged with alternating or direct current, and with DC-fast charging, it can reach 80 percent battery capacity in 40 minutes. But the 45kWh battery only has a range of 200 kilometers and is not the ideal van for long distances.

Volkswagen has been experimenting with combining its old-school aesthetic and modern tech. The e-BULLI stays true to the original when it comes to design and even on the inside not much has been tinkered with.

The e-BULLI does get LED headlights, a classic-looking speedometer with a two-digit display, LED charge indicators on the back of the vehicle and a tablet integrated in the ceiling above the windshield.

Of course you have the option of a new reimagined van in the form of the, the ID Buzz planned for production in 2022. It’s expected to be offered with a massive 111kWh battery pack or a more modest 83kWh pack.
