Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace launched at Rs 33.12 lakh | Rivals Skoda Kodiaq and Honda CR-V

VW plans to broaden its SUV line-up in 2020 and the seven-seater Tiguan Allspace is a headstart to what will follow in the coming months

Volkswagen showcased the Tiguan Allspace at the Auto Expo 2020 earlier in February and now the German carmaker has launched its seven-seater SUV in India at an introductory price of Rs 33.12 lakh, ex-showroom India. The Tiguan Allspace is a CBU and is based on VW's global MQB platform.

Design

To accommodate the extra row of seats, the Tiguan Allspace gets a stretched wheelbase. At 2787mm, the Tiguan Allspace has a 110mm longer wheelbase with 215mm added to the overall length compared to the standard five-seater Tiguan. Additionally, it gets revised LED headlamps with LED DRLs, redesigned grille, and a revised front bumper as well. It also gets 18-inch alloys, side body cladding, a rear skid plate and blacked out fog-lamp surrounds for a proper SUV look.

Powertrain

Volkswagen India will soon retire the BS4 diesel engines and forthcoming VW cars will be powered by the BS6 TSI range. The 1-litre TSI has already been launched in the Polo and the Vento while the 1.5-litre TSI will be seen in the T-Roc and the Taigun. Meanwhile the Tiguan Allspace is powered by the 2-litre TSI, mated to our favourite 7-speed DSG, churning a healthy 190hp and 320Nm of torque. Power is up by 47hp while torque is down by 20Nm in comparison to the 2-litre TDI that the standard BS4 Tiguan gets. The same engine will do duty in the 2020 Skoda Kodiaq, Octavia and the Superb as well. Catering to off-roading fantasies is also VW's 4Motion, four-wheel-drive system with snow, mud and rock modes.

Features

The Tiguan Allspace will be an aspirational car for many Indian buyers and its features' list resonates with its premium positioning. Space is the Tiguan Allspace's USP, and it offers plenty of it, with 340 litres of bootspace with three rows up and 1065 litres with the third row down, to accommodate large objects. Accentuating the cabin space is a panoramic sunroof as well. The cabin is tech-laden with a digital cockpit, triple zone climate control, parallel park assist, paddle shifters, electric boot release and many more such features. Volkswagen cars never compromised on safety and the Tiguan Allspace carries this reputation forward with 7-airbags, cornering lights, ABS with EBD and ESC, tyre pressure monitoring among many others.

The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace primarily locks horns with its cousin, the Skoda Kodiaq and the Honda CR-V, that start at Rs 32.99 lakh and Rs 28.27 lakh respectively. However, prices for the Kodiaq will be revised in the coming months, as the Skoda too will be equipped with the same BS6 2-litre TSI unit. The Tiguan Allspace can potentially lure buyers from a segment above (Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner) and below (Jeep Compass, upcoming Gravitas) as well.
