With carmakers gradually resuming operations, we’re expecting a slew of new car launches in the coming weeks that will aim to revive demand. Mercedes-Benz India though wants to resume business with full throttle by launching two of their most exciting cars in India. The German carmaker will launch the C 63 Coupe and the updated AMG GT R in India on May 27. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the launch will take place digitally.

C 63 Coupe

The C 63 AMG sedan was sold in India until 2018 and Mercedes-Benz India is now set to drive in its coupe sibling. It gets the signature coupe silhouette, supplemented with sportier elements like the blacked-out 18-inch alloys, signature Panamericana grille and a blacked-out spoiler.

Under the hood lies a monster, the 4-litre biturbo V8 that also powers its other ‘63’ badged siblings like the E 63 S and the recently launched AMG GT 63 S 4-door. In the C 63 Coupe this engine produces 476hp and a massive 650Nm of torque, helping it race to a 100kmph in just 4 seconds. In the C 63 S Coupe on the other hand, the powerplant produces 510hp (+34hp) and 700Nm (+50Nm) of torque and is capable of sprinting to a 100kmph in 3.9 seconds. It’s likely that Mercedes-Benz India will bring in the former, but it can only be confirmed on the day of the launch.

2020 AMG GT R

Next up is the beast of the green hell, the updated AMG GT R that was launched globally last year. The GT R is Mercedes-AMG’s ultimate ICE powered track monster that now some minor updates over the older model.

It gets new LED headlamps along with new DRLs and LED tail lamps, with the latter being deeper set and sportier in dark according to Mercedes-AMG. On the inside, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard along with an updated 10.25-inch central display. The centre console gets new display buttons while the steering now gets a controller along with two display buttons on the left to control the AMG drive programmes.

The GT R continues to be powered by the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 585hp at 6250rpm and a colossal 700Nm of torque between 2100-5500rpm. Coupled to the AMG Speedshift 7-speed DCT, the GT R sprints to a 100kmph in just 3.6 seconds. The AMG GT R also gets rear axle steering, three settings of adaptive damping, three-stage ESP among many other features that elevate its performance on track and on the road.

We have done a bunch of cool stories with the AMG GT R (older version) – read about them here. While the C 63 Coupe has no direct rivals in India, the GT R is set to primarily lock horns with the Porsche 911 and the Nissan GT-R . With both the cars coming in via the CBU route, expect the Coupe to be priced around Rs 1.5 crore and the GT R north of Rs 2 crore.
