Hyundai was set to unveil The Genesis G 80 this year at the New York auto show but since it has been cancelled, the brand went ahead and revealed it in a global online stream on all its social media platforms. The Genesis brand is the Korean carmakers continued effort into entering into the luxury sector that the Germans have dominated for all these years, showcasing a whole lot of technology and new features.
The new design language for the Genesis is called ‘athletic elegance’ . The massive grille up front features the Genesis logo crest accented by the quad headlamps on each side, which have become the new signature design language for brand. The side character line of the car as a parabolic line stretching from the headlamps, crossing the doors and going all the way back to the tail lamps. This line has been added to counterbalance the athletic power lines and also helps highlight the 20-inch wheels. A key element for the design of this sedan is the sloping coupe-like roof that seems to be inspired by a fastback design you normally see on the coupe sedans its German rivals make.
Coming to the interiors, the Genesis is plush and opulent. There's a lot of high-quality wood, aluminium and leather trims used throughout the cabin for a luxury upmarket feel. The well-executed interior features a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen system that sits on top of the dashboard. Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with ambient lighting are as standard on the Genesis. Safety? Why, the new Genesis comes loaded with all the tech like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blindspot Collision Avoidance and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control.
An effort by Hyundai has been made to reduce the overall weight of the Genesis as compared to its previous generation, with the use of aluminium throughout the chassis. Powering this all-new Genesis G80 is a set of two petrol engines: a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine making 300bhp and 421Nm, along with a top-of-the-line 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 producing 375bhp and 530Nm. On the diesel side, there is a 2.2-litre four-cylinder making 207bhp. The Genesis is expected to go on sale globally today, though there is no word from parent Hyundai if India will ever get the Genesis brand of products. However, after the success of the Kia Carnival, you just might see Hyundai consider getting a limited run of cars to test the waters with this premium offering.
