Fiat Chrysler Automotive and the Peugeot S.A group merge into a new entity: Stellantis

Approaching the completion of their 50:50 merger announced on 18 December 2019, Peugeot S.A and Fiat Chrysler Automotive today announced the corporate name of the new group

Via a joint press release, Fiat Chrysler Automotive and Peugeot S.A Group revealed the group’s corporate name on Wednesday. Stellantis is coined from a latin verb meaning “to brighten with stars.” This new merger will include, the big stars i.e. Jeep, Ram, Citroën and Peugeot along with a slew of other brands as well, and the brand names and emblems will remain unchanged.

Searching for the new name began soon after the combination agreement was announced and the senior management of both Fiat Chrysler Automotive and Peugeot S.A Group were closely involved throughout, supported by the Publicis Group. The name will be used extensively at the group level as a corporate brand and ahead of the expected completion of the merger in the first quarter of 2021, subject to customary closing conditions that will include approval by both the companies shareholders at their respective Extraordinary General Meetings and the satisfaction of antitrust and other regulatory requirements. The unveiling of the logo with a name will be the next process.

The priority behind the alliance of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot is to help both brands cope with the slowdown in demands and share the cost of building cars and up notch the tougher emissions regulations globally. The alliance will have brands like Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Opel with a potential manufacturing capacity of 1.4 crore units yearly.

Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot S.A haven’t yet announced how they plan to execute this merger and which car platforms – or underlying vehicle structures they will focus on.
