The facelifted BMW M5 Competition has been launched in India priced at Rs 1.62 Crore. Aside from sharper looks, the facelifted M5 Competition also gets many safety and driver-assist aids. Mechanically it remains unchanged with its 4.4-litre V8, adaptive suspension and AWD. But let’s talk about what’s new on the car first.

Exterior

The exterior of the new BMW M5 Competition has not changed much and one has to have a keen eye to notice the differences. The facelifted M5 gets a newly designed bumper at the front which is sharper than before, a redesigned kidney grille and new L-shaped signatures for the DRLs, like we saw with the facelifted 5 Series. There are black styling details all over the exterior like on the front grille, side mirrors and rear diffuser, which contrast well with the bright colours on offer. The rear gets new '3D' tail lights which resemble the typical L-shape we’ve seen with BMWs . The exhaust pipes of the (standard) M Sport exhaust system are finished in Black Chrome and additionally, the new M5 Competition comes with 20-inch wheels, high-performance compound brakes, and numerous optional accessories. It is available in a total of five colours — Hatch Grey and Motegi Red metallic, as well as the optional with Tanzanite Blue II metallic, Aventurine Red II metallic and matt Frozen Bluestone metallic finishes from BMW Individual. The Champagne Quartz metallic shade offered previously has been renamed Alvit Grey metallic.

Interior

On the inside of the facelifted M5 Competition, there is a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment display which is bigger than before. The seats are new too. BMW will give buyers the option to choose from three leather upholsteries — Silverstone, Aragon Brown, and Black. Full leather Merino upholstery in Black or Midrand Beige are also on offer as an exclusive range option. Also on offer are the M-Multifunction seats with an illuminated M5 logo, and it gets many M-specific parts such as the steering wheel, seat belts, footrest, and pedals. It also gets a head-up display, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) roof, ambient lighting, four-zone temperature control, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Engine

The new M5 Competition gets a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 churning out 617bhp and 750Nm of torque. It is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all four wheels and it can accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 3.3 seconds. The two-wheel-drive mode can also be enabled which will then send power exclusively to the rear wheels. The ‘M Mode' button allows the driver to choose between ‘Road', ‘Sport' and 'Track' modes, while the ‘Indiviual' mode allows the powertrain and chassis to be configured to the driver's personal tastes.

The M5 Competition also gets M-specific adaptive suspension, an M Sport exhaust system, a retuned chassis, and a new set of shock absorbers. BMW claims that the 2021 M5 Competition delivers even greater driveability and handling at the limit, thanks to revised shock absorbers derived from the M8 Gran Coupe.

Keeping the pandemic situation in mind, the new BMW M5 Competition can be bought exclusively through BMW official website — shop.bmw.in and customers can select, customise and book the new BMW M5 Competition from their home and even make payments securely. The new M5 Competition goes up against the likes of the Audi RS7 which is priced considerably higher at Rs 1.94 crore.
