When we reviewed the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S earlier this year, we were simply blown away. Its combination of the practicality and luxury of a GT, with sportscar-like performance (its 4-litre bi-turbo V8 makes 630bhp and 900Nm) put a huge smile on our faces.

And now, Mercedes-AMG has gone ahead and taken the record for the fastest ‘executive class’ car at the north loop of the Nurburgring which you may know as Nordschleife circuit.

Driven by AMG development engineer Demian Schaffert, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ has set a time of 7min 27.80sec for the complete lap and has been officially recognised by the track organisers. The car used for the record run was standard apart from the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, bucket seats with four-point harness for safety and the optional aero package. Mercedes claim that the track conditions were “anything but optimal” with parts of the track being wet.

The previous lap record for the fastest executive class car was held by the Porsche Panamera Turbo S (7:29.81 minutes) and was set earlier this year. In fact, prior to that, in 2018, the then Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S had the crown and now, two years later, the new GT 63 S has beaten its own record by 2.3 seconds. Since Nurburgring categorizes executive cars differently, the record is not to be confused with the fastest four-door saloon.

There are rumours floating around that AMG may bring a more powerful plug-in hybrid variant of the GT four-door coupe but until then, the record remains to be beaten.
