Just a month after Jeep announced their plans for increased localisation, it has now confirmed that production of the locally assembled 2021 Jeep Wrangler has begun in its Ranjangaon facility, near Pune. The 2021 Wrangler joins the Compass as the second Jeep to roll out of the plant and will go on sale from March 15.
Although the specifications and prices for the 2021 Jeep Wrangler will be revealed in March during its launch, expect the prices to be lower than the out-going Wrangler (that is currently priced at Rs 63-69 lakh) since it was a CBU. Among other features, the out-going Jeep Wrangler was powered by a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine that produced 264bhp and 400Nm and had a permanent four-wheel-drive system, locking front and rear differentials, electronically controlled front sway bar and all-terrain tyres, among many other features to give it the go anywhere capability.
Partha Datta, MD, Jeep India, said, “Jeep has always represented the ultimate in capability and open-air freedom, and we are incredibly proud that our Made-in-India Wrangler protects that important legacy in the market.”
FCA, now under Stellantis, had invested a total of USD 250 million in India earlier this year to expand its footprint in the country. As a result of that move, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is now the second out of the four localized products that Jeep has promised to launch in India. Apart from the 2021 Jeep Compass and the 2021 Wrangler, Jeep has confirmed that it will soon locally manufacture a three-row Jeep SUV, and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L that was revealed in North America earlier this year. In addition to all this, a sub-four metre compact SUV under development too.
