Land Rover India has opened bookings for the all new Defender Plug-in Hybrid, the P400e, and it will be available in the SE, HSE, X-Dynamic HSE and X trims on the 110 bodystyle. The P400e is the most powerful defender and Jaguar Land Rover India claims that will also be the most fuel-efficient.

Powering the P400e is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that is found on the other Defenders plus a 105kW electric motor that gives it a combined output of 398bhp of power and 640Nm of torque, giving it a 102bhp and 240Nm power and torque bump, respectively. The inclusion of the Plug-In hybrid means that the claimed performance figures are now a 0-100kmph time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 209kmph.

The 19.2kWh battery which drives the 105kW motor can be charged using any 15A wall socket or you can use the 7.4kW AC wall box charger that is supplied with the P400e which will charge the battery in two hours. However, if you get access to 50kW rapid charging, 80 per cent can be achieved in thirty minutes.

Speaking about the upcoming Defender P400e, Rohit Suri, president and MD, Jaguar Land Rover India said, “We are extremely proud to introduce our first Plug-In Hybrid, the new Defender P400e in India, a vehicle that perfectly balances performance with efficiency, while retaining Land Rover’s legendary off-road capability. This also reaffirms our commitment to the introduction of electrified vehicles across the Jaguar Land Rover portfolio, after we had opened bookings for the Jaguar I-Pace in November 2020.”

In terms of other features and creature comforts, the P400e will remain identical to the respective variants, i.e. the SE, HSE, X-Dynamic HSE and X trims on the 110 bodystyle. The price of the P400e variants have yet to be announced and deliveries are slated to begin in the second quarter of 2021. It will make for an interesting comparison to pit the P400e with the non Plug-In hybrid variants.
