There are few letters as evocative in the automotive world as the letter M. Cars that are blessed with the moniker are more often than not the pinnacle of driving joy, and BMW has constantly raised the bar with their M cars. It was on 24 May 1972 that the division was born out of BMW’s motorsport efforts, to create road cars that directly channel the feel of a racing car on the road. Now, the firm is celebrating 50 years of the storied motorsport division, and there are a ton of things to watch out for.

The BMW M3 and M4 50 Jahre special editions will most likely be in the offing

India has also had an enthusiastic relationship with BMW’s M division ever since it was launched here back at the 2008 Auto Expo. Ever since then, the division has grown in strength in the country, especially after the introduction of the M Sport line that made owning and enjoying the pleasures of an M car even more attainable for the Indian customer. The first M engine was also made in India last year, with the BMW M340i xDrive and its inline-six.

The BMW M 50 Jahre special editions get many unique additions

To honour this relationship, BMW is launching 10 new special editions of their M division in the country this year. These will be both CBUs as well as locally-produced models, and include the full-fat M cars as well as M Sport variants. In a romantic tribute to the beginnings of the brand, these special edition cars will also feature the original BMW M division logo from the brand’s beginnings back in 1972, that made its debut in the BMW 3.0 CSL. Other features include special paint options from the M division’s heritage that we also saw on the recently unveiled ‘50 Jahre’ editions of the M3 and M4, as well as special body and design changes.

Speaking of special edition models, it is highly likely that the aforementioned ‘50 Jahre’ editions of the M3 and M4 will feature in the Indian lineup. It is also possible for BMW to bring some of their electric vehicles, like the iX M60 fettled by the M division to our shores. We can’t wait for what BMW’s M division unleashes into the world, so make sure you stay tuned to evo India!
