Audi SQ5 returns with a hybrid engine

Audi has pulled the wraps off the new SQ5. The mid-size SUV makes a comeback with a mild-hybrid electric vehicle drivetrain and compressor technology adopted from the bigger SQ7. The SQ5 is powered by turbocharged 3-litre V6 powerhouse that churns out 337bhp and a staggering 700Nm. The car comes with an eight-speed gearbox and permanent all-wheel drive.  Unfortunately, the hybrid SUV will be available in the international market.

The original twin turbo engine is replaced with a single turbocharger, a separate electrically-powered compressor, and a mild hybrid system. The torque is available from just 2,500rpm which helps propel the car from nought to 100 in 5.1 sec. The top speed of the Audi SQ5 is limited to 250kmph.

The electrically assisted Turbocharger of the Audi SQ5

The car’s turbocharger is assisted by an electrically powered compressor. The turbo activates when the exhaust gas flow provides little energy to drive the turbocharger. This results in easily accessible torque with no turbo lag. Audi is also offering suspension with damper control as standard while the air suspension is optional. Also on offer is Audi Sport differential at the rear axle which distributes torque between wheels. All of these components are individually controllable within the Driver Select modes.

Aesthetically, there are not many changes. The new model shares the same standard equipment as its predecessor but promises to be more practical than the outgoing petrol model.
