The latest generation BMW Z4 was first showcased at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. The car looked quite striking and seemed like a significant step-up in terms of design. We already knew that the new Z4 has a low centre of gravity and 50:50 weight distribution. Also, the new roadster only shares the body type with its predecessor, but has gone through a chunk of changes in terms of design, handling and performance. It’s powered by a choice of two petrol engines. The 3.0-litre straight six unit makes 335bhp between 5000rpm – 6500rpm and 500Nm of torque between 1600rpm – 4500rpm. It spurs to a 100kmph in just 4.5 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. There’s also a 2.0-litre petrol engine on offer that makes 194bhp and 320Nm of torque between 1450rpm – 4200rpm. It accelerates to a ton in 6.6 seconds and  has a top whack of 240kmph. The former is badged M40i while the latter is badged as sDrive 20i.

The new Z4 is quite a step up in terms of design compared to its predecessor. The kidney grille is blacked out and looks very sporty. The bonnet and the front and rear bumpers too sport sharp cuts and creases making for a rather aggressive looking sportscar. For the M sport trim, there’s an option of either 18inch or 19inch wheels while the M40i will solely be offered with 19inch wheels. The soft-top roof opens and closes in just ten seconds and does so at a speed of upto 50kmph. The 2019 BMW Z4 also comes equipped with a heads-up display, adaptive LED headlights, two high-resolution digital displays and a Harman Kardon sound system.

The BMW Z4 rivals the Porsche 718 Boxter, Mercedes-AMG C 43 Coupé and Jaguar F-Type 2.0 Roadster. The Porsche 718 Boxter retails at Rs 89.95 lakh while the Jaguar F-Type range starts at Rs 90.93 lakh, which makes the Z4 M40i a cheaper alternative to its rivals.
