Volvo Cars, the marque that arguably makes world’s safest cars, is recalling over half a million cars worldwide. The reason for this massive recall is a faulty engine component that in rare cases can cause a fire. Investigations made by the Swedish luxury car manufacturer state that the plastic air intake manifold may melt and reform in extreme cases.
The cars that are being recalled are produced between 2014 and 2019 and have a 2.0-litre, four cylinder diesel engine. The models that are affected are the S60, S80, S90, V40, V60, V70, V90, XC60 and XC90. India doesn’t get the S80, V60 and the V90 and these models are sold internationally. But the rest of the vehicles sold in India too will be recalled.
Thankfully there have been no reports of accidents or personal injuries due to this defect. Customers will receive a letter from the company asking them to connect with the local dealerships to rectify the issue. Also, customers won’t have to bear any cost related to the problem.
Almost all of the new Volvo cars have received an excellent safety rating in crash tests. The XC 40 and XC 90 both received 5-star safety rating at the Euro NCAP last year. The V90 Cross Country which was launched in India in July 2017 too gets a 5-star safety rating.
