Road tripping in India has become so much easier now! Here are five new expressways you must plan to drive on your next roadtrip

Delhi-Mumbai expressway

The New Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects currently underway in India. This mega-highway will span over 1,200 km, connecting the two major cities of Delhi and Mumbai with a world-class, 8-lane expressway. The road will cut travel time between the two cities by almost half when the entire stretch is ready. With state-of-the-art features such as intelligent transport systems, advanced tolling technologies, and fully integrated service areas, the expressway promises to revolutionise the way we travel in India. Just going by the small stretch between Delhi and Jaipur that opened last month, the surface quality promises an excellent driving experience. The big improvement in travel time is obvious, but what’s equally good is the fuel efficiency, even when you drive at the 120kmph speed limit, because you will be driving uninterrupted in top gear all through the length of the expressway.

Samruddhi Mahamarg - Mumbai - Nagpur

Nagpur has hugely benefited on the infrastructure front during the current government’s regime for obvious reasons. A majority of the 700km highway has already opened (Nagpur to Shirdi), and the entire stretch should open in a few months. Once fully operational, You could drive from Mumbai to Nagpur in under six hours, shaving over 10 hours of driving time. The expressway cuts through forests where bridges are made for animals to safely cross from one side to another without venturing on the road. This makes the expressway safe and fast, ensuring you can do 120kmph non-stop end to end provided you don’t run out of fuel. The expressway also connects the central part of India to the commercial capital of the country, which will transform the economy of this region in the long run the way the Mumbai-Pune expressway transformed the city of Pune.

Trans-Haryana expressway

We chanced upon this expressway last year during the AMG Emotion tour we did in April 2022. Fast, wide, open and running through the beautiful Haryana countryside lined with fields all along the highway. The Trans-Haryana expressway connects the north of Haryana to the south, joining the old Delhi-Jaipur highway. You can do the entire length of it in a couple of hours and bypass the entire Delhi-NCR region. For roadtrippers from the western and Southern part of the country, getting to Himachal just got easier. Just a word of caution to be careful in winter months on this road as thick fog can envelop the highway at night. The surface otherwise is well marked, making it ideal for usage of ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure mitigation and more.

Purvanchal expressway

Running along the biggest state in our country, The Purvanchal Expressway is a 341-kilometre-long, six-lane, access-controlled expressway. It connects Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, with Ghazipur, a city located on the border of UP and Bihar. The expressway is aimed at improving connectivity and reducing travel time between the eastern and central regions of Uttar Pradesh, but for enthusiasts, think of this expressway as a conduit to the Northeast. With the Yamuna expressway and the Agra-Lucknow expressway, the entire length of the state gets a expressway connection. Road infrastructure in UP has truly transformed over the years.

Delhi-Dehradun expressway

The gateway to the Himalayas in Uttarakhand just got closer. Back in the day, this drive took over 7 hours. Now you can do it in four hours. The entire expressway isn’t operational yet though. The parts under construction should be completed by March 2024. When ready, the 210km long stretch will take two hours to cover. Six lanes, access controlled, straight to the Himalayas. Such expressways are transforming the economy of our country, but they are also demanding the best from car owners. It is important you maintain your car, service it regularly, check your tyres, be more responsible on the road, because when speeds rise, so do risks. A safe car and driver can help reduce accidents and road fatalities.
