Tata Motors is starting the year on a ‘dark’ note with the Safari Dark Edition which has been launched, with prices starting from Rs 19.05 lakh, going all the way up to Rs 22.51 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). It will be offered in the XT+, XTA+, XZ+, and the XZA+ variants of the Safari. The Tata Safari Dark is the latest addition to the Dark Edition lineup, which already consists of the Nexon, Nexon EV, Altroz, and the Harrier. It also extends the Safari lineup which consists of the Adventure Persona and the Gold Edition. The Tata Safari Dark commands a premium of Rs 20,000 over the standard Safari, and competes against the Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar, and the MG Hector Plus.

Tata Safari Dark — What’s exactly new here?

The Oberon Black paint scheme is exclusive to the Safari Dark

Similar to its smaller sibling, the Tata Safari Dark also gets the Oberon Black paint theme with #Dark badging placed on the side fenders and the tailgate. The grille on the Safari Dark receives a piano black finish, unlike the chrome-finished grille on the standard Safari and the gold-finished grille on the Safari grille. It also receives 18-inch Blackstone alloy wheels, and the roof rails also receive the dark treatment with black inserts.

Nappa Granite Black leather interiors should be easier to live with

The interiors, as expected, also receive dark treatment and are upholstered in Benecke Kaliko Nappa Granite Black leather which may just be a bit easier to maintain than the Oyster White Benecke Leather upholstery of the standard Safari, and also the Earthy Brown interiors of the Adventure Persona. The Dark theme does add a touch of sportiness to the Tata Safari Dark, don’t you think?

In terms of equipment, the Tata Safari Dark XZ+ and XZA+ will receive ventilated seats for front and second rows — a feature that’s been carried over from the Safari Gold edition, but strangely ventilated front-row seats are still not offered in the standard Safari. It is important to note that the second-row ventilated seats will be offered only in the six-seater variants.

The rest of the equipment standard across most variants includes a panoramic sunroof, cornering fog lamps, an 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android auto, a nine-speaker sound system from JBL, hill descent control, six-way electronically adjustable driver seat, automatic headlamps, driving and terrain response modes, and wireless charging among others.

Tata Safari Dark edition Powertrain

Under the skin, the Tata Safari Dark remains bang identical to its standard sibling. For the uninitiated, the Safari Dark is underpinned by the same OMEGARC architecture, while power comes from the FCA-sourced 2-litre turbo diesel producing 168bhp at 3750rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1750-2500rpm, paired to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
