Electric vehicles are coming. There are no two ways about it. Yes, maybe a 1000 years down the line we might use some sort of warp drive to bend space and time, but for now, EVs seem like the next frontier. But for EVs to truly become the solution, there needs to be infrastructure. Sure, cars like the Hyundai Kona and the MG ZS EV don’t need to be charged on a day to day basis if you use them for commuting, but you can’t really do a long road trip in them either. The solution? Installing chargers in public spaces and highways. The tie-up between automotive components giant Tata AutoComp and international EV infrastructure company Tellus Power Green is set to help with just that, and more.

Mr Arvind Goel, MD, Tata Autocomp Systems said, “Tata AutoComp has already established joint ventures for providing electric drivelines as well as battery packs for passenger cars, commercial vehicles as well as fast developing two wheelers and three wheelers in India. Tata AutoComp and Tellus will now provide various sizes of AC chargers from 3 kW to 11kW for home and residential complexes as well as DC fast chargers from 20kW to 300kW to meet the needs to charge various types of vehicles in public places such as office and commercial parking lots, convenience public charging stations within cities as well as highways, dedicated depots for commercial vehicles etc. to name a few.”

Long road trips in EVs may soon become a reality!

Setting up DC fast chargers on important highways would improve the feasibility of having an electric vehicle as your only mode of transport to no bounds. Since most modern EVs can get up to 80 per cent charge in around an hour, a food stop while your car charges will be enough to get you juiced up for the rest of your journey. The effort of the Tata Group to help improve EV infrastructure is very evident, and is sure to go a long way in EV charging infrastructure in the country. With more manufacturers taking initiative for the same, it is only a matter of time before owning an EV can be a mainstream choice for most people.
