The Eifel GP at the Nurburgring, Germany was a memorable one for Mercedes-AMG Petronas’ Lewis Hamilton, as his victory here meant him equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 career wins. Coming in second was Aston martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, with Renault DP World’s Daniel Ricciardo in third place, securing his first podium.

The race started off with Hamilton being overshadowed by his polesitting teammate Valtteri Bottas. However, Hamilton managed to pass him by on Lap 13 after Bottas locked up at Corner 1. Six laps later, however, the Finn had to retire, leading to the teams first DNF of the 2020 season.

It was a race of attrition at the Nurburgring, with Bottas joined in retirement by the Red Bull’s Alex Albon, the Renault’s Esteban Ocon, the McLaren F1’s Lando Norris and the Williams’ George Russell, who was taken out after colliding with Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen at Corner 1, on Raikkonen’s own record-breaking 323rd start.

Hamilton had a relatively comfortable run to his record-equalling 91st win, overcoming a Safety Car restart – after McLaren F1’s Lando Norris had retired on Lap 44 – to win over Verstappen by 4 seconds. Hamilton’s victory came on Schumacher’s home turf and in attendance was Schumacher’s son Mick, due to drive in Friday practice for Alfa Romeo this weekend.

Provisional results of race 11 of the 2020 F1 season

Note: Provisional results. Verstappen scored an additional point for setting the fastest lap of the race, while Albon was slapped with a 5-second time penalty for causing a collision.
