During Stellantis’ electrification strategy event, Jeep has unveiled the Grand Cherokee 4xe, a plug-in hybrid version of it’s luxury SUV. It is for the first time that the Grand Cherokee will get an electrified powertrain, but that was bound to happen anyway as Stellantis has announced that Jeep will have “zero-emission” vehicles in every category of its lineup by 2025, with 4xe plug-in hybrid variants of all of its vehicles also on offer by the same year. Meaning the upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will also be available with electrified powertrains.

Jeep gave the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee, for the first time ever a three-row variant and now it has introduced the smaller two-row model with an electrified powertrain; also a first in the model’s 18-year lifespan. While in broad terms the 2022 Grand Cherokee looks much like its longer Grand Cherokee L sibling from the front, it differs in a few aspects, as we can see from the few pictures Jeep has showcased. For starters, there’s a slightly tweaked front bumper and a charging port on the driver's side front fender. The C-pillar also gets a revised design that gives it a floating look.

Jeep hasn’t given away details of the powertrain yet, but we can expect it to be the existing plug-in hybrid system currently found in the Wrangler 4xe that came out last year. The 2.0-liter turbo-petrol four-cylinder, in the Wrangler, gets electric assistance from two electric motors and a peak output of 369bhp and 637Nm torque.

Expect the Grand Cherokee 4xe to share the hybrid powertrain with the Wrangler 4xe

Jeep also showed some cool tech which they plan to introduce by 2025, to make Jeep-ing more fun for adventurers and Jeep enthusiasts alike. This includes solar charging stations on off-road trails, autonomous remote off-road functionality, drone pairing capabilities which can help during night off-roading by projecting light ahead and other cool stuff like biometric recognition to start the vehicle and peer-to-peer charging.

Back home, Jeep India has different plans. We’re likely to see a seven-seater Compass in the foreseeable future followed by the Grand Cherokee L sometime in 2022. Jeep also sells a plug-in hybrid Compass in international markets, and that could be a good start towards electrification of its range in India if there’s adequate charging infrastructure.
