Nissan India has launched the X-Trail at Rs 49.92 lakh. The SUV will be offered in just one trim as a full import in India. The X-trail goes up against the Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson and Jeep Meridian in this segment.

The USPs of the X-Trail include its high-tech 3-cylinder turbo petrol 1.5-litre engine and the promise of top quality Japanese engineering and reliability. That engine makes 161bhp and 300Nm of torque and comes with Variable Compression turbo tech that essentially alters the compression ratio depending on the driving style to deliver either performance or efficiency. This engine is mated to a CVT gearbox that sends power to the front wheels only. 0-100kmph comes in a claimed 9.6 seconds and Nissan claims a fuel efficiency figure of 13.7kmpl. We tested the X-Trail at 120kmph where it returned an impressive 13.1kmpl. You can read the full review here.

On the inside, you get a three row seating combination with a sliding middle row, fabric seats and a panoramic sunroof. The digital cluster is a 12.3-inch unit and the infotainment screen is an 8-inch unit. The X-Trail misses out on seat ventilation, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as well as ADAS.

Since the X-Trail attracts heavy CBU import duties, it is the most expensive SUV in its segment. Its key competitors, the Kodiaq, Tiguan, Tucson and Meridian are priced at Rs 39.99 lakh, Rs 35.17 lakh, Rs 29.02 lakh - Rs 35.94 lakh and Rs 29.99 lakh to Rs 34.17 lakh respectively for an equivalent variant.
