Audi recently showcased it updated A6 after Mercedes-Benz’ new E-Class which meant, BMW had to follow suit. And they have. After lending the 5 Series with an all new platform recently, BMW has decided to keep things subtle for 2021 with a midlife update. The changes are mainly cosmetic; both on the outside and inside with also new engine offerings, currently slated only for the international markets.

Changes to the exterior include a larger and more prominent kidney grille surrounded by new L shaped DRL infused headlamps. The front bumper has been tweaked too making i t look sportier before than before. The tail lights resemble that of the latest 3 Series and the exhaust pipes too have been heavily redone to add to the fresh look. All the updates have added 27mm to the overall length (21mm on the estate). BMW has also w orked to reduce the drag coefficient to a class leading 0.23Cd thanks to an active air flap control system for the radiator, also seen on the 7 Series.

The 5 Series now gets the latest gen iDrive infotainment system along with a larger 12.3 in display as an option

On the inside, the 5 Series now gets the latest gen iDrive infotainment system along with a larger 12.3 in display as an option. The dash too gets a new AC control display and gloss black centre console. The seat functions from the M5 have been carried over as well and will be offered as an option on the M Sport package.

In terms of technology, both the pe trol and diesel 4/6 cylinder variants will feature a 48v starter generator alongside a second battery, adding up to 11bhp of additional boost. There is a new coast function that shuts of the engine when you lift your right foot, improved regenerative braki ng and the ability to shut the engine off when speeds drop below 9kmph.

Talking about the engines, the global range now gets a new all wheel drive 545e variant which comes with a 3 litre, in line six cylinder, turbo petrol engine churning out 247bhp along side a 105bhp electric motor a la the 745e. The total output is rated at 389bhp and 600Nm allowing the 545e to hit 100kmph in just 4.7sec. All the drivetrains are equipped with an 8 speed automatic gearbox, as on the predecessor. No manual variant will be offered.

The revised M5 is expected to hit the market sometime later this year alongside the M5 CS which is expected to feature a rear wing as seen on the M2, M3 and M4 CS variant. Expect the new M5 to be the most powerful iteration of the super saloon ever.

BMW India hasn’t announced any launch dates as of yet but we expect it to be here in India by the end of 2020 or early 2021. The 5 Series goes up against the Jaguar XF, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 in India.
