The MotoGP 2021 season has been full of drama and action over the nine races that have taken place so far. The races have been held without much hassle and we also got to see a few spectators in some of the races with the restrictions in place, a sign of better times ahead. However, the FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports have announced that the 2021 Thai GP has been cancelled due to concerns over the spread of covid-19.

The 2021 Thai GP was set to take place at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram from October 15 to 17. Despite the precautionary measures taken by all parties involved, the grand prix had to be cancelled due to the rise in the number of covid-19 cases in the country since April, which would have played a role in the decision to cancel the event. So far, the Thai GP is the first race to be cancelled since the 2021 MotoGP calendar was finalised.

The pandemic cases have risen in Thailand since April 2021

That said, the future of the Thai GP is safe. The FIM MotoGP World Championship plans to return to the passionate Buriram crowd in 2022. Meanwhile, a replacement for the grand prix is currently under consideration and will be announced soon.
