Close on the heels of the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida opening up for business post the coronavirus lockdown, the Madras Motor Racing Track (MMRT), Chennai, is set to restart operations as well, with full compliance to the Government-approved guidelines, on June 14. As per the new norms, track days, corporate events, as well as tyre and vehicle testing (by manufacturers) has been approved.

Now, we already knew the reopening of sport stadiums, and by extension racetracks, was allowed in Tamil Nadu as per the easing of restrictions associated with the ‘Lockdown 3’ protocol. So for further clarity on what the revised norms entail, we spoke to Vicky Chandhok, president, Madras Motor Sports Club.

“First of all, this is only for limited testing” he said, adding, “the earliest that racing can start, under the present circumstances, can only be in September.”

What it means for attendees

There will be quite a few precautions in place at the track. This starts with the number of people that can be allowed out in the track complex at any time, with the limit set to twenty. Additionally, only one person per two-wheeler and two people per four-wheeler will be allowed within the premises. These people, too, will compulsorily need to wear a face mask irrespective of their health condition, submit to checks (especially thermal screening) before entering the premises, and sign and submit a declaration on their health status (pre-printed forms will be available) at the security gate. This form will be in addition to the usual undertaking forms signed by patrons during the track’s regular 'arrive and drive' programmes.

Once within the track complex, all vehicles and materials should be cleaned and sanitised. Additionally, all patrons will need to carry their own water bottle and hand sanitiser, and maintain social distancing at all times.

It will be a while before competition restarts

Schedule and prices

Two-wheelers will be allowed on track between 9am and 1pm, with the gates closing at 10am. The charges will be Rs 1500 per session per rider. For four-wheelers, the timings are between 2pm and 6pm, with the gates closing at 3pm. The charges will Rs 4000 per session per driver.

As mentioned, all-out motorsports will only take place on or after September 2020, though it is unclear at the moment whether spectators will be allowed on track. Till then, whoever wants to indulge in the Thrill of Driving or Riding, can head to either the MMRT or the BIC, post haste!
