Volvo Cars has introduced the updated version of the flagship SUV, the XC90 for international markets. The car features the company’s newly developed fuel-saving engine option marking Volvo Cars’ electrification strategy. The car goes into production this May for the international market and the deliveries will begin from next quarter.
The new XC90 is the first car to offer the company’s advanced Kinetic energy-recovery braking system. Paired to the existing internal combustion engine, the new electrified powertrain will sport the company’s new “B” badge. This electrified powertrain offers up to 15 per cent fuel savings and emission reductions. The new brake-by-wire, in conjunction with the energy-recovery minimizes fuel consumption by recovering kinetic energy under braking.
On the exteriors, the updated XC90 features minimal updates like the new wheels, an updated grille. The car is based on the company’s in-house developed platform, powertrain and safety technology. The XC90 will be available in B5-badged mild-hybrid petrol or diesel variant, as well as a B6-badged petrol mild hybrid.

Volvo has announced that the company is upgrading its existing Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain and the plug-in option will be available on every Volvo car. The company has boosted the production so up to 25 per cent of total production can be twin engine plug-in hybrid cars. The company aims to make the ‘B-Badged’ cars to become the new standard, which is in line with its goal of electrifying all the cars by the middle of the next decade. The new, upgraded powertrain will also be introduced in the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA)-based cars.
While there is no official word on the India launch, we expect the new Volvo XC90 to make it to our shores by the end of this year.
