GMC has finally taken wraps off the Hummer EV SUV. The inaugural 'Edition 1' model gets an 818bhp tri-motor setup that promises 0-100kmph in 3.5 seconds and a range of 480 km. The base 'EV²' variant makes the Hummer EV SUV significantly more affordable with a smaller battery and lower power figures. Deliveries will commence from early 2023.
The Hummer EV SUV gets the styling that is similar to the pickup. Both the Hummer EVs get a similar face with an LED light bar that spans the entire width of the front fascia. The grille is broken into six individual slats with each housing a letter spelling out the word Hummer. The headlamps, additionally, feature unique charging graphics. What's different though is the slightly shorter wheelbase on this SUV variant, and an enclosed rear section with a tailgate mounted full-size spare wheel. The shorter wheelbase gives the Hummer EV SUV better approach and departure angles and should make it a more capable off-roader than it's pickup sibling. The Edition 1 model gets a set of neat looking 22-inch wheels and side foot steps.
Inside, the Hummer EV SUV gets a five seat layout. It has an upright dashboard that is dominated by two displays – a large 13.4-inch central touchscreen and a smaller 12.3-inch unit ahead of the driver. The infotainment screen can be programmed to display torque output figures, pitch and roll angles, and other readings to aid off-roading. The 'Edition 1' model gets bronze accents and on offer will also be the cool 'Infinity Roof' individually removable glass panels, which we first saw on the EV pickup.
The Hummer EV SUVs main party trick off-road is its four-wheel-steer and 'Crab Walk' feature that makes it possible to move diagonally. Additionally, the 'Extreme Off-Road' package gets underbody protection, electronic front diff, ball-spline half shafts that allow pivoting of the driveshaft and the UltraVision2 camera system that transmits underbody views. If that's not much for you, GMC will also offer over 200 optional accessories. A standard fit on all Hummer EV SUVs is the company’s latest Super Cruise driver aid that includes hands-free semi-autonomous driving with lane change capability.
As it is based on GM's Ultium battery platform, every trim level of the GMC EV SUV (except for the entry level which is due later) will feature an 800V 20-module battery system. With a choice of two or three motor setups, power will range from 616bhp to 818bhp with torque figures ranging from 10,033 Nm to 15,591 Nm. Take that with a pinch of salt though, since those are likely wheel torque figures.. That said, it will have impressive performance with a claimed 0-100kmph time of 3.5 seconds.
While the battery storage capacity hasn't been revealed yet, it will be lower than that on the Hummer EV pickup because of the Hummer EV SUV's shorter wheelbase. The battery range on the other hand will be at over 480+km if you don't opt for the Extreme off-road package which drops it down to 450km. Fast charging will also be possible, courtesy the 800V system, at speeds of up to 350kW, enabling 100 miles (160km) of range in 10 minutes of charging on a DC fast charger.
The Hummer EV SUV is priced from $88,898 (Rs 65.2 lakh) to $131,898 (Rs 96.8 lakh) in the USA. It will face competition from the upcoming Rivian R1S and the Bollinger B1 Ev SUVs. They promise similar performance and capabilities like the Hummer, while having identities of their own.
