Volkswagen has issued a global recall for the sixth-gen Polo concerning a faulty rear seat belt mechanism. The latest-gen Polo is not available in India and the recall is limited to international markets, where the car is sold. The press release says that when the rear centre and left seat in the car are occupied and it is subjected to sudden lane changes, the seat belt lock could be unintentionally released. This may cause safety issues for the rear seat occupants.
The source of the problem has been identified as the belt lock fixture. Volkswagen says that the cars will be fitted with a new redesigned fixture to fix the problem. The recall will happen in a few weeks and customers will be notified to head to their nearest Volkswagen service facility to address the issue. The repairs will be done free of charge. Volkswagen has advised the customers to not use the middle seat of the latest-gen Polo till the car is fitted with a new belt lock fixture. The company is addressing the problem for the future series models as well.
