Suzuki has revealed the technical specifications of the latest iteration of its iconic SUV, the Jimny. The SUV was also launched in Japan today, in two door form. Last month, the company revealed the exterior images and an image of the interior of the Jimny along with a few technical details.
Powering the Suzuki Jimny is a K15B 1.5-litre, four cylinder petrol engine that produces 100.6 horses and 130Nm of peak twist and it comes mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. This 1.5-litre engine replaces the older 1.3-litre unit and is smaller in dimension and lighter by 15 per cent. Top speed of the SUV is a claimed 145kmph for the 5-speed manual variant and 140kmph for the 4-speed automatic version.
The Jimny comes with the makings of a typical lightweight, rugged off-roader that it is, like a rigid ladder frame chassis, part time 4WD system with a low ratio transfer case christened ‘All Grip Pro’, three link rigid axle suspension with coil springs, brake LSD traction control, hill hold and hill descent control. In a mushy situation when two wheels diagonal to each other lose traction, the brake LSD traction control comes into play and distributes the torque to the other two wheels and helps the Jimny power its way out. Safety features include 6 airbags, ESP, lane departure warning, audio and visual warning in case of a collision and a driver alert system. The Jimny also gets a tyre pressure monitoring system.
The Jimny has an overall length of 3480mm and a wheelbase of 2250mm. The approach, departure, and breakover angles of the Jimny are 37°, 49° and 28° respectively. The ground clearance of the SUV stands at 210mm, which is pretty decent for a light weight off roader. Minimum turning radius is a tight 4.9 metre. The Jimny tips in the scales at 1090kg for the base variant and 1135kg for the fully loaded variant. Hauling the SUV to a stop is done by disc brakes up front and drum brake units at the rear. The SUV gets 15-inch alloys shod with 195/80 section tyres.
We will probably get the five door version of the SUV in India, with a choice of a diesel powertrain when it makes its way to India . For all those Gypsy fans who have been yearning for a light weight true blue off roader, the Jimny with its retro-modern design, rugged build and off road abilities could be an ideal choice for off-road enthusiasts who want an SUV option other than the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha.
