One of the most iconic moments in a Formula 1 weekend is when the giant Rolex clock hits 12, signalling the moment when the race is about to start. If you’re a Formula 1 fan, that moment is when the goosebumps begin. While most of us can’t remember a Formula 1 weekend without this tradition, it might be odd to hear that Rolex has been Formula 1’s official timekeeper since only 2013. And this year, they are celebrating ten years of being associated with Formula 1.
Rolex’s association with the world of motorsport has been long and fascinating. They have not only supported Formula 1, but also been a historic partner of the Daytona 24 hours as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In fact, a large part of the mythos of winning these races has been the honour of winning and wearing the winner’s Daytona watch that the watchmaker provides. Many of Rolex’s most iconic watches have their origins in the world of motorsport.
Sir Jackie Stewart, three-time F1 world champion and a longtime ambassador for the company, said, “This year marks 10 seasons of Rolex’s partnership with Formula 1, and since the beginning both have embodied ground-breaking technology, precision and ingenuity at every level, while having a mutual appreciation for magnificent craftsmanship, style and, ultimately, the importance of timing. Nine-time F1 Grand Prix winner Mark Webber said, “This year also marks 10 seasons of Rolex and Formula 1, which is a wonderful milestone that showcases loyalty and is something that both parties can be very proud of.”
