Three years after the launch of the AMG GT S Coupé, Mercedes unveiled its Roadster variant. The new variant adds to the German company’s ever-expanding AMG line-up. Mercedes now has three open-air two-seater cars on offer.
The AMG GT S Roadster is positioned between the AMG GT Roadster and the more powerful AMG GT C Roadster. It mirrors the specs of the Coupé. It uses Mercedes’ 4-litre V8 biturbo engine which gives an output of 522hp and peak torque of 670Nm. This engine propels the car from standstill to 100kmph in 3.8s. It achieves a top speed of 308kmph. It has five drive modes, a 7-speed DCT, and an option of the high performing AMG ceramic braking system. An electronically controlled locking differential at the rear-axle, the company promises, not only improves the traction of the drive wheels, but also increases the critical cornering speed. The result is that the driver is able to accelerate out of corners earlier and with more power thanks to the improved traction.
On the design front, it looks similar to the GT C Roadster. The exterior and spaceframe of the GT S Roadster consists of intelligent and lightweight material with high proportion of aluminium. And an extremely lightweight front deck made of magnesium. The jet wing design and forward sloping radiator grille enhances the cars aerodynamic look, making it sit flatter on the road. The long bonnet with its pronounced power domes and the large wheels and broad tail end. All contribute to the distinctive looks of this pure Mercedes sports car.
The interior echoes the aesthetic of the exterior, with concave door panelling, high beltlines, a dynamic centre console and low seating, upholstered in black leather. The silver chrome trimmings highlight the powerful design of the GT S Roadster.
“With the AMG GT S Roadster, our AMG GT family has gained another exceptionally sporty member that combines high driving dynamics with an emotional open-air experience,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The new model represents the perfect alternative for the performance-oriented AMG GT Roadster customer.” The market launch of Mercedes AMG GT S Roadster is pegged for July. The pricing isn’t available currently. Although it is predicted to split the price differential between the GT Roadster and GT C Roadster variants.
