Good news for G-Wagen enthusiasts! Mercedes-Benz India has opened bookings for the all-electric G 580, which was unveiled earlier this year. While the exact price and launch dates remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that the electric G-Wagen will hit the Indian market around mid-2025.
The G 580 maintains the design language seen in the concept model, closely resembling the ICE-powered G-Class. Notable features include a raised bonnet, new A-pillar trims, a roof lip spoiler, and improved aerodynamics. The EV sports a unique blacked-out front grille and standard 18-inch aerodynamic rims. Additionally, a square box at the rear offers more luggage space.
The interior of the G 580 is also similar to that of its ICE-powered counterpart. Key elements include square-edged air vents, a passenger grab handle, and trim in open-pore natural walnut wood, reminiscent of the current-gen G-Class. The multifunction steering wheel is covered in Nappa leather, and standard features include ambient lighting and leather upholstery. The vehicle is equipped with the MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch display with touch controls, along with an augmented reality feature for navigation.
The electric G 580 boasts a clever set of features enhancing its off-road capabilities. These include virtual diff locks, G-Turn and G-Steering for near on-the-spot turns and tighter turning circles, and a two-speed gearbox for each motor, maintaining a true low-range mode. The 'Transparent Bonnet' feature displays the view from beneath the bonnet, simplifying off-road driving. The G 580 also has an impressive fording depth of 850mm.
The all-electric G 580 is equipped with four electric motors, delivering a combined maximum output of 579bhp and 1164Nm of torque, with a claimed WLTP range of 473km. It accelerates from 0-100kmph in just 4.7 seconds and has a limited top speed of 180kmph. With DC fast charging, it achieves a peak charging capacity of 200kW, allowing a 10-80 per cent charge in just 32 minutes. A 15-minute DC charge can provide up to 170km of range, perfect for impromptu trips.
Although detailed information remains scarce, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 is expected to launch around mid-2025. The ICE-powered G-Class is priced well over Rs 2 crore in India, and the electric G-Wagen is likely to be priced higher. Overseas, the brand has also launched the Edition 1 alongside the standard model, it will be interesting to see if the brand will do the same for the Indian market.
