Since the issuance of FASTag in the market, the time duration at the toll has decreased significantly. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program with the help of FASTag, which employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly. The technology issued in 2014 has been made compulsory and has been followed diligently from 2019. NPCI has issued some changes to its rules that will take effect from August 1. Here are key changes that you need to be aware about.

  1. FASTags older than five years need to be completely replaced.

  2. FASTags over three years must update the Know Your Customer (KYC) details by October 31, 2024. If failed to do so, the FASTag will be blacklisted and won't be operational; hence double toll will be charged.

  1. Under the "One FASTag, One Vehicle" scheme, the FASTag needs to be linked specifically to the vehicle's registration number (VRN) and chassis number. Newly purchased vehicles should be issued the new FASTag within 90 days of the purchase.

  1. FASTag providers must also implement additional mandates to perform thorough verification before issuing the tag. This includes clear photographs of the car's front and side profiles and making sure the details are in line with the VAHAN database.

  1. Each tag should be linked with the mobile number of the respective vehicle owners for seamless communication, thus establishing timely updates and notifications regarding their FASTag status.
