The 2022 Range Rover fifth generation has finally come to India, with prices announced today. The iconic and capable luxury SUV which has set benchmarks all over the world will be sold in India at a starting price of ₹2.38 crore (ex-showroom) for the 3-litre diesel SE variant, while going all the way up to ₹3.43 crore (ex-showroom) for the 4.4-litre Petrol Autobiography trim with the LWB.
The Range Rover already has an iconic design, and JLR didn’t tinker with the successful idea too much. However, a whole new modernist and minimalist approach has given the fifth-gen its own unique style, with flush headlights and taillights that take much less space on the body of the SUV than before. In fact, the body has been smoothened to such an extent that the 2022 Range Rover has a drag coefficient of just 0.30, the lowest of all luxury SUVs in the world. This helps range, efficiency and top speed. The boat-tail rear overhang and split tailgates also remain as part of the Range Rover heritage.
The new Range Rover hopes to continue its excellent legacy of luxury with options like a range of fabric options for the interior, more technology enabled features and isolation. There is a 1600W sound system with speakers embedded in the seat headrests which also act as a noise cancellation device, making the NVH levels of the SUV all the more lower. Cabin air purification is present as well as the centrepiece of the interior: a 13.1-inch curved floating infotainment system allied to a 13.7-inch instrument panel that accentuates the minimalist philosophy of the exterior. The rear passengers also get 11.4-inch displays to enjoy their content, operated via another 8-inch touchscreen that acts as a control panel. You can never have enough LED!
The new Range Rover is built on the MLA-Flex platform with a fully independent air suspension system and all-wheel-steering that allows easier operation of this gigantic vehicle. The engine options in India are also immense, with both six and eight cylinder options present. There is a hybrid 3-litre petrol six-cylinder option that produces 394bhp and 550Nm of torque, as well as a 3-litre diesel producing 346bhp and 700Nm of torque. Both six cylinder engines are based on 48V mild hybrid technology. The flagship Range Rover is powered by a massive 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 523bhp and 750Nm of torque.
The 2022 Range Rover is offered in three trim levels in India - the SE, HSE and Autobiography. The SE models start at ₹2.38 crore, with the HSE models starting at ₹2.64 crore. The Autobiography meanwhile starts at ₹2.99 crore. All prices are ex-showroom and not including other extras, such as the LWB variant, which starts at ₹2.56 crore for the SE variant. The Range Rover will compete with the Bentley Bentayga, Maybach GLS and Aston Martin DBX in India, and has proven credentials as well as popularity in the Indian market. Will it be enough to dethrone the luxury kings? Only time will tell.
