BMW SUVs have always been in your face when it comes to design, and that trend is carried forward with the BMW X4 which has just received a refresh. The 2022 X4 Sports Activity Coupe has been launched in India with prices starting from Rs 70.50 lakh ex-showroom. The X4 will be locally produced at the BMW Group Plant in Chennai and will be sold in two trims, with both petrol and diesel options.
At first glance, the 2022 BMW X4 looks identical to the SUV that it replaces, but closer inspection will reveal the design has been given a refresh. The double kidney grille has not grown larger in size, as is the trend with newer BMWs, getting all-black mesh inserts instead, with the grille frame being finished in high gloss black. The X4 also gets adaptive headlamps with a Matrix function as standard, and these headlamps slimmer , being finished with black accents from the M Shadow line. The front apron of the X4 is also redesigned and when you move to the side, you will notice the 20-inch double-spoke M alloy wheels and the M Sport brakes with red callipers which lurk behind them. Move to the rear and the bumper is done up in a dark shadow metallic colour with inlays in high gloss black. The X4 also gets two-part wraparound LED tail lamps. In addition to the two paint schemes on offer, which are Black Sapphire and M Brooklyn Grey metallic, the X4 will also be available in limited numbers in an exclusive ‘Black Shadow’ edition that promises to look very stealthy!
Step inside the X4 and you are greeted by the leather Vernasca upholstery with black stitching. While the layout of the cabin is identical to the outgoing X4, it continues to be a high quality interior with ambient lighting that gets six selectable light designs. The X4 also gets three-zone climate control along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. You continue to get gesture controls for the infotainment along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with audiophiles being delighted to know that the X4 comes with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound system. The X4 also comes with in-built 3D navigation, along with a parking camera and parking assist.
The BMW X4 will be offered with a choice of two engines. The xDrive30i gets a 2-litre petrol engine that produces 248bhp of power and 350Nm of torque, while the xDrive 30d gets a 3-litre diesel engine that produces 261bhp and 620Nm of torque. Both these engines are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The diesel accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 5.8 seconds (claimed) while the petrol achieves the 100kmph sprint in 6.6 seconds (claimed).
The BMW X4 will be locally assembled at the BMW Group Plant in Chennai and prices for the SUV start from Rs 70.50 lakh for the petrol engine and the diesel-engined X4 is priced at Rs 72.50 lakh. In terms of rivals, the X4 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and traditional SUVs like the Jaguar F-Pace.
