The lack of Indian representation in any level of MotoGP or international motorcycle racing is a very curious case considering India is home to the largest number of two-wheelers in the world. Indeed, one might say we are a country mad for our bikes! Now, there is hope, as the FIM has brought the MiniGP World Series to India. Created in 2021 as the first step in the ‘Road to MotoGP’ ladder, the FIM MiniGP World Series India will give young aspiring Indian kids an opportunity to enter the tough world of motorsport with a safe platform. The top-two in the championship will also get to go to Valencia at the World Finals, and showcase their skills to a global audience.
What will they be riding? Only the most advanced minibikes in the world. Similar to what Karting is to the world of four-wheeler motorsport, the MiniGP World Series India will use minibikes supplied by Ohvale, one of the world’s foremost creators of this category of motorcycles. Weighing only 65kg, the Ohvale GP-0 160 minibikes are powered by a 160cc engine that produces 15bhp. Being far smaller than a regular motorcycle, the minibikes as well as the championship are aimed at young talent between the ages of 10 to 14 who will learn the basics of motorcycle racing on these machines.
The best part? Every selected participant will get the minibike and riding equipment for free from the partners and manufacturers. The trials and selection will take place on 2 and 3 July, with the five-round calender taking place from 23 July yo 25 September. All five races will take place on kart tracks in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
The top-two in the chamionship also get the honour of going to Valencia for the world finals, as well as having an opportunity to showcase their skill and talent to managers across the world. We can’t wait for this new championship to bring back motorcycle racing in India. For more news from the world of motorsport, stay tuned to Fast Bikes India!
