The Mahindra Scorpio-N has created a culture and fascination for itself in the Indian cultural milieu that not only extends beyond automotive enthusiasts, but also has a reach few cars can hope to match. The long-awaited new generation of the Scorpio-N has finally been revealed, albeit with only a few details and some surprising announcements.
The SUV, previously known by its codename, the ‘Project Z101’, has now been christened the Mahindra Scorpio-N. This is to differentiate it from the current-gen Scorpio which will continue to be on sale, now renamed as the Mahindra Scorpio Classic. The Mahindra Scorpio-N is a clear evolution of the current-gen Scorpio in terms of design, with a boxy look and upright hard points. The main changes are under the skin. With the new SUV, Mahindra has moved the Scorpio-N up into the D-segment, with an emphasis on what they describe as “premium interiors” with advanced safety features and technology.
Mechanically, Mahindra has made several changes to the Scorpio-N, as well as new options. These include a newly developed body-on-frame platform. It is important to note that Mahindra has stuck with a body-on-frame philosophy and not moved the Scorpio-N to a monocoque chassis, which is often perceived to be less tough and off-road worthy in the Indian market. The Scorpio-N will get both petrol and diesel engine options, with a choice of automatic or manual transmissions. There will also be the option of having four-wheel-drive on the new SUV. Details about the transmission will be revealed at a later date. The Scorpio-N also gets the new Mahindra twin peaks logo that we first saw on the XUV700.
Veejay Nakra, President of Automotive Division at Mahindra said, “Scorpio has been a landmark model for Mahindra which has redefined the category and became an iconic brand in the Indian automobile industry. The All-New Scorpio-N is expected to recreate benchmarks in the SUV segment in India, yet again. With an unmissable design, thrilling performance and high-end technology, we continue to carry forward the Mahindra legacy of building authentic, tough yet sophisticated SUVs. With the All-New Scorpio-N, we continue to live and deliver our brand promise of ‘Explore the Impossible’. The Scorpio-N signifies our commitment towards bringing world-class SUVs to the Indian market and creating delightful ownership experience for our customers.”
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N will compete with the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Kia Seltos, occupying a space between the Mahindra XUV700 and the Mahindra Bolero Neo. Mahindra has revealed that the official launch will take place on June 27 at the Indian manufacturer’s plant in Chakan. We can’t wait to see one of the most awaited SUVs in the country for ourselves, so till then, stay tuned to evo India for more news!
