Time and again we've heard that mid-size and compact SUVs aren't real SUVs, but rather crossovers. Prices for these cars like the Creta and Seltos, go up to ₹25 lakh (on-road). These are the best-in-class, with great power figures, features, and comfort. But they’re still crossovers. So, if you’re someone who wants something more from the car, wants to go off the beaten path and ensure you do everything in luxury, then SUVs like the Endeavour, Cayenne, Montero, etc. are available for under ₹25 lakh, in the used market. In the used market, you can choose between German cars, Japanese, European, Scandinavian, and more. We have listed six used SUVs that are luxurious, tough and might be a viable option for you, over brand new crossovers. Keep reading!

1. Ford Endeavour

Ford could never sell enough Endeavours as Toyota sold the Fortuners, so availability of cars are scarce. The 2017 Endeavour got a 2.2-litre diesel engine with 4x4 only available with a MT, and a powerful 3.2-litre engine with 4x4 in AT and MT, which is currently the most demanded engine in the Endy. Later with BS6, Ford brought in the 2-litre four-cyl EcoBoost engine, mated to a 10-speed AT. Both the cars are similar, but the 3.2-litre variant feels slightly more rugged and capable, while the 2-litre is very refined and gives great fuel economy at cruising speeds. You can find Endys in the used market for anywhere ranging from ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh.

2. Porsche Cayenne

Back in 2013, there weren't many premium SUVs out there, and the Porsche Cayenne, was the most premium of them all. It features a 3-litre diesel engine with a mild-hybrid system. It was available in many forms — S, Turbo, Turbo S, GTS, etc. They are well-built, but complicated machines that need a lot of pampering. If you are able to find a car that is less driven and been taken care of by its owner, then it can be the best pick in under ₹25 lakh.

3. Mitsubishi Montero

In 2007, the Mitsubishi Montero was the SUV whose path you would not dare cross. Available with a 3.2-litre engine, it was very capable off-road and equally capable on tarmac. It came with a Rockford Fosgate sound system, and the seats could recline to 180 degree to form a flat-bed, stretching from the driver's seat till the last row. These were on sale till 2013 as CKDs and priced under the ₹35 lakh mark, but in 2017 it was relaunched as a CBU and priced wildly at ₹72 lakh. You can find one from 2007-2013 for well under ₹25 lakh, but procuring spare parts might be a challenge.

4. BMW X3

The 2015 BMW X3 was available in the xDrive30d configuration with a powerful 3-litre straight-six diesel engine that pushes out 250bhp and 560Nm. The X3 is based on the same platform as the 3 Series, and is not only a good driver's car but also spacious enough for a full family. Finding the xDrive30d with the 3-litre engine is rare, but you can get the xDrive20d for well under ₹15 lakh.

5. Land Rover Discovery Sport

The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport is built on the same platform as the Evoque, but gets tweaked components for off-road use, and the C-pillar has been stretched out. It replaced the Freelander 2, and sits under the Discovery. Land Rovers are meant for those who don’t fear rough terrains, and have the urge to take the cars off-road. The Disco Sport gets optional 5+2 seats, and houses a 2-litre four-cylinder engine. You can get your hands on this in the used market for ₹25 lakh.

6. Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner doesn't need much introduction. Reliability is the brand's strongest suit, other than the alpha personality it carries. The 2.8-litre diesel engine is refined and capable for off-road use and even cruising at higher speeds. Fortuners depreciate less than other SUVs, so buying one will still cost a bit more money, but you'll be able to sell it for a good price too. You can find all generations of the Fortuner ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh.

We love real SUVs with proper 4x4 capabilities. These are a few that are available for under ₹25 lakh in the used market, and feature powerful diesel engines. These cars may not be relevant to you, if you stay in the Delhi-NCR region, due to the 10-year ban policy on diesel cars. But if you don’t, then these cars will truly bring out the ‘Thrill of Driving’, and you can even look for used cars from the used market in Delhi, as people tend to sell their cars for cheaper than market price, as they want to sell the car before it hits the 10 year mark.
