Continuing with #SaferCarsforIndia, the Kia Carens is the latest to have been tested in the Global NCAP safety tests, where it has scored three stars. The Kia Carens was launched earlier this year, and has faced instant success among buyers looking for a 7-seater in the price bracket of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 17 lakh.

The Carens was tested for front impact at 64kmph and side impact at 50kmph in its base variant, which offers six airbags as standard, along with electronic stability control and ISOFIX child seat anchorages. Kia’s people mover has scored a total of 9.30 points out of 17 in adult occupancy, and 30.99 points out of 49.00 in child occupancy. GNCAP did note that the Carens gets only a lap belt in the second row, and also described its bodyshell as unstable.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “Global NCAP welcomes Kia’s decision to make six airbags a standard fit in the Carens ahead of a regulatory requirement. However, we expected a better performance from this model. It remains a cause for concern that global car brands such as Kia, that normally achieve 5 star ratings in other markets, are still not reaching this level in India.

In other news, the Mahindra XUV700 has been awarded with the ‘Safer Choice’ award from GNCAP. This is the second time the Indian SUV giant has won this award, as a result of scoring one of the highest safety ratings back in 2021. GNCAP has also announced this will be the last set of results under its current set of protocols, as the new protocols are going to be more stringent, and will include electronic stability control, side impact, and pedestrian protection from next month.
