HP Envy 15 review: The ultimate editing laptop?

We tried out the HP Envy 15, and here is what we think about it

At evo India, our video editing team goes through a massive amount of footage to create the much-loved YouTube videos you see on our channel. A typical work week for our video editors includes workflow centred around Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Most of the heavy lifting is done by our custom video editing rig but we were always curious to see if a laptop could handle the heat. So, when HP sent us the Envy 15, we simply had to put it through the test.

The fact that we decided to lend it to the video editing team was encouraged by a few important factors. The 10th-gen Intel i7 under the hood along with the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1660Ti meant that the Envy 15 could possibly make light work of all that was thrown its way. Then there was portability. The fact that such a powerful machine was nestled in a light, compact form, made it all the more appealing for editing on the fly.

The simple, clean aesthetic of the HP Envy 15 with premium materials all around meant that our video editors immediately took a liking to it. The all-aluminium body with the matt finish and the impeccable build quality make it very desirable. Even with an aluminium casing, the laptop weighs just a smidge over 2 kilograms, which makes it very easy to carry around, allowing us to edit videos on the fly.

The 15.6-inch Full HD IPS panel with a 60Hz refresh rate is great to edit with. 72 per cent NTSC colours, or 100 per cent sRGB colours mean that colours are reproduced fairly accurately. The brightness levels are also high enough for you to work in the balcony on a sunny day. The anti-glare coating on the panel makes long hours a lot more comfortable.

The 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10750H processor with base clock speeds of 2.6GHz and up to 5GHz with TurboBoost is accompanied by 16GB of DDR4-2933 SDRAM. There’s a 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD in the mix and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti with 6GB GDDR6 RAM to take care of the graphics processing. All this means that our video editing workflow was a breeze on it. There were hardly any hiccups and very little stuttering or frame drops even when stretching the processing capabilities of the system with multiple running tasks.

The Envy 15 doesn't just come with top notch specs but also a fast charging solution

The HP Envy 15’s charging solution added to its appeal. It comes with a 200W fast charger that can charge it up to 50 per cent in 45 minutes. We easily achieved 5-6 hours of battery life while editing, which is, quite honestly, remarkable.

Performance, portability and build quality come together in a great package in the Envy 15 that is rare to find. Suffice to say, our video team enjoyed working on it. At its price point, there are very few machines that can come even close to matching what the HP Envy 15 offers. Highly recommended.
