Land Rover makes some of the toughest SUVs in the world and they have been doing so since their inception. But when it introduced the Range Rover back in 1970, it combined the already legendary off-road ability with plenty of luxury. 50 years on, the Range Rover family of SUVs are still some of the most luxurious and most capable vehicles and they make a statement that few other cars do. To commemorate the milestone, Land Rover is building a special edition called the Range Rover Fifty, celebrating this very lineage, with a range of handpicked colour options and plenty of details splattered all over to remind you that it is no ordinary Range Rover. Only 1970 will be built, a nod to the year the first Range Rover was introduced. So, if you’re interested you should probably get on the phone with your nearest Land Rover dealer right about now.

Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Land Rover Chief Creative Officer, said “In the world of luxury vehicles, the Range Rover has always stood apart as peerless and enduring. Its unique and pioneering sensibilities together with an unrivalled engineering approach have been the intrinsic values which our customers have admired since the first of the breed was revealed in 1970.”

The Range Rover Fifty is based on the already lavish top-spec Autobiography trim level but it gets a bunch of details to make it even more special. There are numerous badges and logos on the outside and inside that say ‘Fifty’, in a bespoke font designed by Prof Gerry McGovern OBE himself. A plaque on the inside also mentions ‘1 of 1970’, highlighting how limited the model you’re sat in truly is. Most of the silver detailing on the outside, including the Range Rover badge on the front and the vents behind the fenders on the side are coloured in ‘Satin Auric Atlas’ which is an extremely light gold. You can also choose to have the Range Rover Fifty with a black pack which, as the name suggests, blacks out all the light gold accents mentioned above. The Range Rover Fifty can be had in a total of seven colours, three of which — Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold and Davos White — are heritage options commissioned by Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations.

Over the years, we’ve driven multiple iterations of the Range Rover, and the sense of elevation and disconnect from the road the full-sized Range Rover, and even the Sport, gives you is incredible. The Range Rover family has expanded now to accommodate the Evoque and the Velar, two stylish SUVs that can still hold their own when the going gets rough. There truly are very few SUVs that have the heritage or symbolism that a Range Rover does. Happy 50th Birthday, big fella!
