BMW India has launched the first-ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé at Rs 39.3 lakh, ex-showroom for the base Sport Line trim and Rs 41.4 lakh for the M Sport trim. Locally produced at the BMW Group Plant Chennai, the coupe is available in a diesel variant at all BMW India dealerships from today onwards. The petrol variant will be launched later.

Unlike the new 4 Series, the kidney grilles on the 2 Series Gran Coupe are reasonably sized. The design highlight is of course the swooping coupe-like roofline that neatly blends into the rear. Upfront it gets BMW’s signature four-eyed face with LED DRLs and LED headlamps. It gets stylish 18-inch alloys on the M Sport trim while the Sport Line gets 17-inch rims as standard. Another design highlight are the frameless doors that add a touch of elegance to the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s design. The LED taillamps extend to the center of the rear and they are sleek, similar to what its new generation bigger siblings are getting.

Powering the 2 Series Gran Coupe is the same 2-litre twin-scroll turbo diesel engine that also powers the entry level diesel variants of the 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X3 and X4. The engine produces 187bhp at 4000rpm and 400Nm of torque between 1750 and 2500rpm. It makes the 2 Series Gran Coupe sprint from 0-100kmph in just 7.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 233kmph. It’s mated to the brand’s staple 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. Speaking of which, the 2 Series GC is the only BMW in India that’s based on a front-wheel-drive platform. That said, BMW is also claiming a fuel economy of 18.6kmpl.

Plush cabin of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

In terms of features, there’s ample on offer. In the cabin you get two 10.25-inch screens, one housed in the instrument cluster and one acting as the infotainment screen in the centre console. You also get dual zone climate control, wireless charging, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, gesture control and parking assist among many other premium features. Being a front wheel drive car, BMW has equipped the 2 Series GC with what it calls a wheel slip limitation system to reduce understeer. The system improves traction and stability of the car by targeted braking of certain wheels.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe has no direct rivals in terms of the design, but in terms of price and positioning, the sedan will stack up against the latest generation Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine when they’re launched in the coming months.
