TomTom inaugurates traffic centre in Pune

TomTom, famous for its GPS navigation devices and fitness trackers inaugurated its traffic centre in Pune. It is set to be the second largest site after Amsterdam.

The traffic centre in Pune will help TomTom to gather and process the comprehensive data collected from various types of GPS sources such as traffic sensors and road cameras, smartphone navigation apps, Portable Navigation Devices (PND), in-dash navigation on passenger and commercial vehicles, and mobile phones. The collected data is over ten terabytes per month, which is processed at the Pune traffic centre to deliver real-time traffic details, congestion delays, road-blocks and alternative route options. The data will be stored in dedicated servers in Pune as well as over the cloud.

“Pune joins our Amsterdam and Berlin sites in showcasing TomTom’s technology and engineering excellence in the area of navigation, maps and traffic which can help pave the way to smarter mobility,” said Alain De Taeye, Member of Management Board, TomTom. “As our largest site outside Amsterdam, Pune contributes significantly to our map and traffic products, enabling cities to realize their smart cities vision,” he added.

TomTom traffic centres also support an online portal – TomTom City, which delivers real-time traffic data such as live traffic speed, live traffic level, live traffic delays and also weather conditions of the selected city, it also allows the users to report a map change or if anything is missing on the map. TomTom Citys in India include Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Kolkata.
