Tata Harrier launched at Rs 12.69 lakh – Creta and Compass watch out!

The wait is over as Tata Motors has finally launched its flagship SUV in the country today. The Tata Harrier starts at Rs 12.69 lakh for the base XE variant, going all the way to Rs 16.25 lakh for the top-of the line XZ variant. The Tata Harrier has the Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass and Mahindra XUV500 in its crosshairs.

First production vehicle from Tata Motors to sport the ‘Impact 2.0’ design language

The Harrier is the first vehicle from Tata Motor’s stable to sport the Impact 2.0 design language. It is based on the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced or OMEGA architecture which is developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover. It has a massive road presence and that is no surprise since it is wider and longer than the Creta and the Compass. Under the bonnet is a Fiat sourced engine which Tata has named as Kryotec. Essentially it’s a 2-litre, 4-cylinder, Multijet II diesel engine which develops 138bhp at 3750rpm and 350Nm of peak twist from 1750rpm to 2500rpm. For now, there is only a six-speed manual transmission and front wheel drive. There are three drive modes – Eco, City and Sport. However, these modes just alter the ESP settings of the vehicle.

Interiors of the Tata Harrier

It’s no doubt that the Tata Harrier has a very spacious cabin. It is also an elegant place to be in, with the wood finish and the piano black accents to give it a premium feel. In our first drive review, asst ed Aninda noted that the knee room, shoulder room and head room is plentiful. The boot space too, is a generous 425 litres. Dominating the central console is the 8.8-inch floating touch screen infotainment system. Another cool thing is the aircraft throttle inspired hand brake design. You also get a 7-inch TFT screen in the instrument cluster, which displays all the essential driver info.
