One of the most intriguing aspects about Visakhapatnam is its location. It lies along a large portion of the east coast of India and the coastline almost immediately merges with the mountains. The result is plenty of aerial views of the Bay of Bengal. We reached Vizag from Vijayawada the previous night and the beaches and a breezy weather relieved our exhaustion. Our hotel room too offered a panoramic view of the Bay of Bengal and crew members Sachil, Vishal and Neeraj went gaga over the view. On day 14 of the India Diamond Trail we drove the Renault Kwid to this beautiful port city.

We first visited the Ross Hill church in city. This hillside church offers sweeping views of the sea and the port. Speaking of which Vizag houses the 2nd largest port in India in terms of cargo volume transfer after the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai. You see plenty of trucks, containers and cranes while driving around the city. This makes you realise the magnitude of trade that takes places through this port. Vizag also houses the oldest shipyard in the world. It’s quite a place to drive through as plenty of colourful wooden ships are docked at the harbour. It even reminded me of the Pirates of the Caribbean thanks to their vintage style.

We halted for the night on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha and today we’re headed to Kolkata. In a couple of days we’ll be in the north east and we just can’t wait to drive our travel companion, the Renault Kwid to the easternmost point of India.
