Porsche reveals 911 GT2 based 935 Racer at Laguna Seca

Porsche 935 ‘Racer’ – A tribute to the original 935 “Moby Dick”

To celebrate the company’s 70th anniversary, Porsche Motorsport has revealed their 935 ‘Racer’ which is based on the current 911 GT2 RS road car. The 935 ‘Racer’ was built to pay homage to the 935 “Moby Dick” race car from the 70’s. The 935 ‘Racer’ was revealed at the Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca.

The race car is not homologated for Championship racing but is expected to be used at club motorsport events and track days. Porsche will produce 77 examples, each costing €700,000 which is approximately Rs 5.89 crore. The 935 ‘Racer’ is powered by the same 3.8-litre, twin turbo, flat-six motor producing 700bhp. The motor is mated to Porsche’s 7-speed PDK transmission. It is also fitted with the Porsche Stability Management system along with ABS.

The 935 ‘Racer’ has a modern iteration of the original Moby Dick’s aerodynamic bodywork which is made of light carbon fibre composites. Complementing the bodywork, is the Martini Racing livery which is identical to the 1978 935 built for Le Mans. To provide the feel of an authentic 935 racecar, the interiors were made identical to the Le Mans winning RSR with a full roll cage, carbon dash, racing bucket seats and a wooden PDK shift lever just like the 917.

Weighing 1380kg, the new 935 features an emergency escape hatch in the roof, air jacks for pit stops and an instrument display straight from a 911 RSR racer complete with data logger.

The braking duties are carried out by cast-iron discs with six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston callipers at the rear along with an adjustable brake bias valve. The front suspension is MacPherson struts with forged links and three-way adjustable motorsport dampers, with reinforced tie-rods. The rear suspension is a multi-link set-up. It is fitted with 18-inch forged centre-lock wheels, 215mm wide tyres at the front and 330mm wide tyres at the rear.

Only 77 examples of the new 835 racer will be produced with a price starting from €701,948 which is Rs 5.91 crore plus local taxes. Porsche has scheduled vehicle deliveries for June 2019 before which the car will be showcased and demonstrated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
