Yamaha India recalls the YZF-R3 due to defective fuel tank and power switch

We have a received a statement from Yamaha saying, “The YZF-R3 is an exceptional performer and has been very successful on Indian roads. Recently, the parent company Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd., Japan has detected a defect in its Fuel Tank Bracket and Main Switch Sub Assy and has announced a recall. In India, this will affect 1155 vehicles.”

Yamaha will replace the defective parts with a modified one free of cost under a factory modification campaign at Yamaha dealerships. The company is going to communicate to the customers directly for the replacement exercise that would begin immediately.

About the defective parts, it is the fuel tank bracket that may have taking the beating due to engine vibrations which, in turn, could have caused the fuel tank to crack and causing a fuel leak. The other part that is defective is the power switch assembly that would corrode because of saturation of water, from rain or moisture, in turn giving a starting issue.

This is not the first time that Yamaha has recalled the YZF-R3. The Japanese manufacturer had recalled around 15000 YZF-R3s for faulty oil pumps, transmission and front brakes in Japan. These motorcycles were manufactured between March and May 2016.
