Mahindra & Mahindra announced the introduction of automatic transmission in the W6 FWD variant of the XUV500 which will cost Rs 14.26 lakh. The auto ‘box option will now be available across the W6, W8 and W10 all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive variants of the SUV.
The 6-speed gearbox is a traditional torque convertor unit, sourced from AISIN, Japan. It has been doing duty on the W8 and W10 variants since November 2015. The addition of the W6 variant makes the SUV more accessible to a larger base of customers who are looking out for SUVs in the market, or even mid-size saloons.
Previously, if you wanted an automatic XUV500, you’d have to opt for the W8 variant which is a steep Rs 1.5 lakh more expensive. Now, on the W6 you get a 7-inch infotainment display, auto-headlamps and wipers, dual airbags and ABS as standard. However, it misses out on ESP, side airbags, traction control, leather upholstery, alloy wheels, an engine start/stop button, keyless entry and Mahindra’s logo projecting ORVMs.
The XUV500 competes with likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster. The top-of-the line automatic diesel Creta is available for Rs 15.2 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) while the AMT equipped RXL variant of the Duster costs Rs 12.28 lakh.
