Renault has unveiled its new direct injection turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine. It is offered with three power output variants. The Energy TCe 115 produces 115bhp of maximum power and comes with a manual gearbox. The Energy TCe 140 and Energy TCe 160 produce 140bhp and 160bhp respectively. Both the TCe 140 and TCe 160 are offered with manual and EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) automatic gearboxes. The maximum torque range for TCe 140 and TCe 160 is available between 1,500rpm to 3,500rpm and 1,750rpm to 3700rpm respectively. The ‘Dual Variable Timing Camshaft’ technology in these engines governs the intake and exhaust valves to provide torque in a wider rpm range while the key concern has been to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Several new innovations have been included as a part of the new alliance. The engines are Bore spray coated, a cylinder coating technology currently used in Nissan GT-R to coat the cylinders which reduces friction and increases efficiency while optimizing heat transfer. The pressure of the injector has also been raised by 250 bar and the new combustion chamber design is employed to optimize the fuel/air mix. The engine options will soon be provided on other Renault models as well.
Alliance Global VP – Powertrain & Electric Vehicles, Philippe Brunet, said, “Our new petrol engine embodies all the expertise of Groupe Renault’s engineers, the Alliance and our partner Daimler. It meets the quality standards of both the Alliance and Daimler, with more than 40,000 hours of testing. Compared with the Energy TCe 130, the new Energy TCe 140 delivers 35Nm additional peak torque which is available across a broader rev band, from 1,500rpm to 3,500rpm.”
