Mercedes-Benz will be launching the GLE 450 AMG Coupé in India on the 12th of January. The car will be Mercedes-Benz’s first launch in the new year, after launching 15 cars in 2015.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 450 Coupé is essentially a standard GLE with a sportier roofline and an AMG-sourced engine. This is the first SUV that Mercedes-Benz will be launching in the country with this coupé-like roofline. Under the hood of the car lies a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine good for 362bhp and 520Nm of torque. This allows the 2.2 ton behemoth to accelerate to 100kmph in 5.7 seconds, and will go on to hit a limited top speed on 250kmph. Power is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the same one that features on the standard GLE but this is tuned to suit the high-performance AMG engine. The GLE 450 also comes with adaptive damping for a better ride. Cosmetically, apart from the roofline, the car gets obvious AMG styling cues like larger air intakes and twin chrome exhaust pipes.
BMW was the first brand to introduce SUVs with coupé like styling with the X6. The success of that unconventional car has forced its competitors into creating products in that space. This GLE 450 Coupé will be facing off against BMW’s coupé-SUV, the X6, with its 3.0-litre V6 diesel. However, BMW doesn’t offer a petrol variant. The fact that the GLE 450 AMG Coupe is powered by a petrol engine means it slips past the restrictions on registering cars in the Delhi-NCR region and you can get one before the restrictions are lifted.
