It looks like Lamborghini doesn’t want to settle down with their insanely fast two seater sport cars. What makes us to say that? Well, recently chief executive Stephan Winkelmann and R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani have confirmed that they are going to introduce a new 4×4 SUV named as Urus powered by Lamborghini’s first turbo engine.
Stephan Winkelmann quotes, “For the first time we will have a turbo engine inside – we will have a V8.” He also added, “But the Urus will still be a super sports car among the SUVs. It will be the most powerful, the fastest and also one that is easy to drive and handle.”
The current top sprint champs in the performance SUV segment is the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S with a 0-100kmph run in 3.8 seconds. However the Italian supercar maker has set its sights on making the Urus a sub-4-second SUV, but the target will be to better the Cayenne’s time.
As for power, we already know Lamborghini will use Audi’s twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, but Maurizio Reggiani said it will be tuned specifically for the Urus and will also have a different exhaust note to make it worthy for Lamborghini. He didn’t provide an exact power figure, but the R&D boss did say it will have more than the 600bhp and 900Nm offered by the Bentayga.
Initially, the model will come with a V8-only, but Reggiani also added that there are probabilities during the life cycle of the Urus of a plug-in hybrid version featuring a V6 engine.
The production car is expected to remain faithful to the 2012 Urus concept however company boss Stephan Winkelmann has revealed that the vehicle will provide more interior space than the concept, so some changes to the car’s shape and proportions are planned. He also added “You will immediately recognise that it cannot be anything else other than a Lamborghini. It is changing (from the concept car) but for the better. It has to be a daily usable car that can get you comfortably from A to B, yet it has to have a lot of power in terms of acceleration and also top speed.”
The Lamborghini Urus is expected to show up at the Geneva show in 2018 and will go on sale in the same year only.
