Maranello has good news for everyone! Ferrari is finally set to manufacture the convertible version of its flagship, LaFerrari. The CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Sergio Marchionne confirmed this during an interview with Automobile Mag.

The LaFerrari Spider is expected to hit the roads sometime next year and should be one of the most desirable drop-tops when it does. It will feature the same V12 engine that does duty on the LaFerrari but is expected to be priced higher. The structural setup of the car’s roof has not been discussed yet but it is expected to be some kind of a Targa system like the Ferrari 488 Spider. The overall driving dynamics is expected to be similar to the LaFerrari, although the car will be heavier as a result of chassis modifications to make up for the loss in structural rigidity. Revisions to the suspension and chassis are expected as well, to make it handle like the LaFerrari. Expect the buy-in for the Spider to be even more exclusive than the roofed version. Only 499 LaFerraris have been manufactured and sold by Ferrari, till date.

When questioned about the more user-friendly and less lethal version of the LaFerrari, named ‘LaFerrarina’, Marchionne said that only the Spider version was meant to be connected with the hypercar as potential customers were already being approached. Meanwhile, the plans to bring the long awaited V6 Dino are not clear. Marchionne said that the positioning as well as the pricing of the Dino as compared to the 488 GTB has not been decided yet.

Along with the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder, the LaFerrari completed the “holy trinity” of hypercars, creating an entirely new category of extreme performance cars that belong to a different level. Could the LaFerrari Spider be the fastest convertible ever? Only time will tell.
