Bajaj QUTE/RE60 receives global launch. With the launch of Bajaj’s quadricycle named the Qute in Delhi, Bajaj Auto is set to target the autorickshaw market globally and will be exported to 16 countries. However it hasn’t yet been approved to ply on Indian roads by the authorities so you won’t be seeing it any time soon. Meanwhile, the Qute has got clearance from several European, Asian, African and Latin American countries already. It has also been awarded the European WVTA (Whole Vehicle Type Approval) certification by RDW Netherlands. Its all too confusing to begin with. Bajaj Auto prefers to call it a Quadricycle and not a car. The reason of this according to them is- it’s a light-weight vehicle with a low speed cap. Powering the car is a water-cooled 4-valve DTSi engine mated to a five speed gearbox. The fuel economy is a claimed 36kmpl and top speed is speed of 70kmph. The car is made out of steel and plastic. There are no glass windows, just plastic curtains with a zipper. It has got seats, steering, a windshield, wiper, tyres, door pockets, a 12V power socket, doors, front and rear headlamps. The storage space behind the rear seat isn’t much while ingress and egress takes some getting used to. Bajaj Auto is set to replace the 50 year old Autorickshaw and if they decide to phase out the ubiquitous ‘rickshaw ‘ it will be interesting to see what the general audience make of it.
